Library and Technology SkillsAll students visit the Library for 50 minute classes. The first 30 minutes are used for Library Skills lessons while the last 20 minutes are used for checkout and stations. Library lessons support Kansas Curricular Content for Library/Information and Technology standards, ISTE standards, and classroom Common Core ELA standards. Students will participate in Library Skill lessons as well as Technology units throughout the year.

CheckoutStudents checkout the first day of the week that they visit the Library. If they visit Monday and Friday, they'll only checkout on Monday. Students who miss their library day or finish materials early are welcome to get new titles during Open Checkout. Visit our schedule for more information regarding Open Checkout. Kindergarten students checkout 1 book, grades 1st-4th checkout out 2 books, and 5th graders checkout 3 books. Students are welcome to place holds on books as well as renew materials they need longer unless the item has a hold.
Once an item is 30 days overdue, we send home an overdue notice with a replacement fee. If the item is returned, no fee will be charged. |
Book Care
All students kick-off the year learning the importance of book care. Some things your child learned include:
- Keep books in a safe place like a backpack but make sure there isn't a water bottle in there too.
- Wash your hands before you read your books.
- Keep your books in a safe place away from baby and pets.
- Carry your books with both arms to keep the corners and spine from getting damaged.
- Never eat or drink while you're reading your books.
Intellectual Freedom
Article V of the Library Bill of Rights states, "A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views." It further states, "...[P]arents--and only parents--have the right and responsibility to restrict access of their children--and only their children--to library resources. Parents who do not want their children to have access to certain library services, materials, or facilities should so advise their children. Librarians and library governing bodies cannot assume the role of parents or the functions of parental authority in the private relationship between parent and child."
At the beginning of the year, kindergarten students will be limited to checking out Everybody Nonfiction and Everybody Readers, while first graders are limited to Everybody Nonfiction, Everybody Readers, and Everybody picture books. As the year progresses and your student gains confidence in selection, we'll open up browsing to additional shelves. If you have a preference or restrictions as to what your child may checkout, please discuss this with them. Our goal is to help your child develop a LOVE of reading. Therefore, our Library is organized by genre (type of book), not the reading level of the book. We do not restrict students to selecting books in their reading level.
